Some Laboratory Apparatus

1. Test tube
- glass tubes, closed at one end used in making chemical test; used for heating small amount of solution in experiments.

2. Florence Flask
- used as a container for boiling liquid solution; used for measuring large quantity of liquid.

3. Beaker
- a deep wide mouthed, thin-walled, cylindrical vessel with a pouring lip used for measuring large quantity of liquid.

4. Watch Glass
- a crystal used for observing small amount of sample undergoing reaction.

5. Centrifuge
- used for whirling fluid rapidly to separate substances of different densities through artificial gravity and centrifugal forces.

Some Filipino Scientists which contributed to the field of Chemistry

1. Dr. Rosalinda C. Solevilla

  • Pharmaceutical sciences, for research and that established the anti-microbial activities, diuretic, analgesic, anti-pyretic, and the anti-inflammatory properties of some Philippine medical plants.
  • Contributed significantly in the promotion of the use of medicinal plants as alternative medicines and in the government's program to improve the country's health care and lifestyle.
2. Dr. Francisco Fronda
  • He had improved methods of production for the poultry and livestock industry.
3. Dr. Gregorio Velasquez
  • spent intensive study over 30 years researching myxophyceae which is blue green algae which he received local and international recognition.
4. Dr. Benito Vergara
  • believes that his greatest contributions to science are his researches on rice, his numerous graduate students, his book on Farmers Primer on Growing Rice, which has been translated into more than 40 languages, and his development of Riceworld Museum and now the Philippine Science Heritage Center.

State Changes in Matter

  • Melting- change in state from solid to liquid (high temperature needed)
  • Evaporation- change in state from liquid to gas (high temperature needed)
  • Condensation- change in state from gas to liquid (low temperature needed)
  • Solidification- change in state from liquid to solid (low temperature needed)
  • Sublimation- change in state from solid to gas without passing through the liquid state (high temperature needed)
  • Deposition- change in state from gas to solid without passing the liquid state (low temperature needed)

What is Chemistry?

Everything around us is part of chemistry. Even us, we are part of chemistry. Learning chemistry is easy and fun.

Chemistry is the science concerned with the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions.
